Day 4 Mt. St. Helens

Today was for Scott. The eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 occurred the morning of Scott's birthday party so it has always been a very memorable moment for him. Since we were going to be in the area we thought it would be great to go and see MSH. I had only ever seen it once from a plane.

We drove the 1.5 hours to the Johnston Observatory. On the drive up (to 4000 ft elevation) we stopped at a few observation points to look at the river bed. It was incredible to see these hills made during the land & mud slides that had trees randomly sticking out. The destruction of the area was massive. The Observatory had great presentations. The kids got to play with a seismograph. The best part would have to be the movie of the eruption and then the screen rises up, the curtains open and there is the mountain. It is amazing how powerful the event was.

On the way back to the hotel we geocached. Scott added 9 more caches to bring his total to 226. The kids had fun helping him make the finds.
